It is something like job enrichment or job enlargement. it is not a promotion but a lateral movement. it makes an emploee a jack of all trades so that he/she can be put in any job role in the same level in hirarchy. It is needed when there is a change in technology and the emploee has to be trained for a similer job role at the same level .
