Health Promotion emerged in the1980’s as a way of addressing health issues in an integrated way.
It is multi-disciplinary, drawing on fields such as psychology, biology, sociology, economics, political Science, medicine, and law. It developed as a response to a significant body of research which suggested that it was more effective to look at the contexts in which people lived, rather than only Addressing their behaviors.
Health Promotion is defined in a number of ways. For example, the World Health Organisation (1986) stated:
“Health promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health.”
In their widely accepted book, Green and Kreuter (1991) suggested:
“Health promotion is any combination of health education and related organisation, economic and Environmental supports for behaviour conducive to health and well-being.”
Whilst Raeburn and Rootman (1998) claimed:
“Health promotion is concerned with positive health and well-being; with the whole of life… involving a complex notion of health to include bodily, mental, social and spiritual states… and which (health promotion) occurs incrementally over time… linked to everyday life and community and is about changing the balance of power in the human and health domains.”
Health promotion have more border concepts than Health Education. Health promotion is any actions that enhance the health of the individual and community. For example, Health education intervention, Nutritional intervention, Government rules and regulation, etc. can be considered as Health promotion interventions. Where as, Health Education is focus on designing educational message through behavioral diagnosis to change unhealthy behavior and maintain positive behavior in order to prevent disease and promote health of individual and community. Thus, Health Education is one of the strategy that used in Health promotion activities.
Health promotion is an essential branch of community medicine that seeks to improve the health of the people through policies and programs. It is closelely intertwined with health education as community education on issues related to health and wellbeing is a way of improving the health of the people.
The of health promotion experts includes but is not limited to policy formulations, health programs formulation, community education and awareness creation, all these is aimed at increasing accessibility to health care, improving health care seeking behavior and encouraging governments and health agencies through recommendations.
Health education: it is a fied that is derived from medical sciences that emphasizes on planning, implementing, and evaluating health programs in order to prevent or to decrease the severety of a an illness or an outbreak among individuals and communities.
Health Promotion: is the process of advertisement that stresses on the outcomes of the health education programs to achieve optimal health. It includes marketing strategies to health individuals and communites to adapt a healthier lifestyle.
Health education and promotion go hand in hand. The objective of any provider should be to promote good health(impress upon the community home to improve their health). To do this you must educate the community.
