Domains, workgroups, and homegroups represent different methods for organizing computers in networks. The main difference among them is how the computers and other resources on the networks are managed.
Computers running Windows on a network must be part of a workgroup or a domain. Computers running Windows on home networks can also be part of a homegroup, but it's not required.
Computers on home networks are usually part of a workgroup and possibly a homegroup, and computers on workplace networks are usually part of a domain.
Domain:A domain is group of computers sharing similar security properties. The system on which Active directory services is Installed is Known as Domain controller.domain supports User centralization,Authentication and user logon services,Printer sharing and other resources, Group policy Management and complete administration of resources over a network.
WorkGroup: The system which is not a part of domain is a workgroup system,no user centralization, limited access to resources, stand alone etc
A domain in the Windows networking environment is a PDC server that actually mantains user accounts, policies and other network configuration. A workgroup is just a peer-to-peer network without a computer being the role of a server. You really only join a DOMAIN, since joining requires credentials. If you are in a workgroup, you are just a member of the workgroup (anyone can be a part of it).
