networking devices used to connect the users in the same network like L2 or L3switches, this devices use the same L2 protocol, and can't connect deferent L2 protocols,  internetworking devices used to interconnect networks like routers, it is can connect networks that use deferent L2 protocols like PPP, HDLC, Ethernet, Frame relay,....

Hi

Ans:

There are two basic devices that are allow you for networking

L3 Switch (multi layer) AC's / AP's

L2 L3 Router

L2 netowkring is normally used where your are dealing with transformations of data, packets, mails

but when you talk about Voice packets, L3 networking is recommended for you, because the voice packets Transformation required more speed and security, the entire packet must be transfer in the form which sender send it .. if packets will loss or rearrange in the way of transferring then the receiver can not listen it clearly ..

Thank you !!

Switches- to connect the users computers  and  printers

Routers - to connect to the outsede networks and internet

Firewalls- To protect Network

Intrusion Prevention - To protect from Viruses etc

Wireless Access Points - For connecting Wireless computerss

in a large organization you will have more than one of the above  devices

Passive or Active, if you ask about active :

  1. Gatway working on application layer
  2. Router workingon  network layer
  3. switches working on network and datalink layer depend on the sw type
  4. bridge on layer2 datalink layer
  5. hub on the phasyical layer
  6. repeater on the phasical layer

there are different types of devices having dfrnt functnz , working on dfrnt layerz to perform and support data communication in networks, like routers, switches, hubs, repeaters, lan cards or ethernet cards, different types of connectors..etc

Repeater: Also called a regenerator, it is an electronic device that operates only at physical layer. It receives the signal in the network before it becomes weak, regenerates the original bit pattern and puts the refreshed copy back in to the link. Bridges: These operate both in the physical and data link layers of LANs of same type. They divide a larger network in to smaller segments. They contain logic that allow them to keep the traffic for each segment separate and thus are repeaters that relay a frame only the side of the segment containing the intended recipent and control congestion. Routers: They relay packets among multiple interconnected networks (i.e. LANs of different type). They operate in the physical, data link and network layers. They contain software that enable them to determine which of the several possible paths is the best for a particular transmission. Gateways: They relay packets among networks that have different protocols (e.g. between a LAN and a WAN). They accept a packet formatted for one protocol and convert it to a packet formatted for another protocol before forwarding it. They operate in all seven layers of the OSI model.
