There are short term and long term affects on the body and environment. It can be a short sickness needing medical attention to cronic diseases. Exposure can badly damage the envirnment that can have irriparable damge in long term. 

 In Europe, long-term exposure to current ambient particulate matterconcentrations may affect the lungs of both children and adults and may reduce life expectancy by a few months, mainly in subjects with pre-existing heart and lung diseases.
