The ideal case would be a combination of both - relevant major & relevant experience.
In case of having the experience alone, you should showcase the proudest achievements at your work ( i.e.
what have you achieved & implemented in terms of marketing strategies, campaignes,..,etc) what are the techniques you were exposed to and how this learning experience has added value to your career.
It is always great to express yourself clearly through your profile by giving the employers sufficient information about you and what you have done so they can be convinced that you are the ideal candidate for their openings.
Good Luck!

Well for me, Skills and expertise are the most essential phase to add in any professional profile and after that, it ofcourse comes with Job Experience and Academics (Studies).

The honest answer most employers want both.
They want someone who has a firm understanding of content knowledge and has been able to prove him or herself as competent in the application of those concepts.
Beyond that it really would differ from company to company.
It is my firm belief that most established companies would prefer an individual that has experience and a proven track record over one who just has content knowledge.
The process of recruitment and hiring an individual is an investment.
Companies try to avoid risk and furthermore sunk costs in poor investments and turnover.
Hiring the individual with experience is less risky.
However, there are some companies who will take the risk and hire someone with no experience but it really isn't the norm.

understanding the real market scenario is must for a job in marketing field.
you must be aware of the market need and demand for a specific product you are going to handle.
if demand is not there then how to create a market.
So all these thing can be acquired by a real time practical that is the job experience and for the acquisition you must have the knowledge.
so most of the company seek for both experience and knowledge.
