are you looking to freelance or find a job in a visual-related field such as a photo/video studio or production house? Either/or you need to build a portfolio.
Split that portfolio into two sections, the stuff you're passionate about, the cool artsy stuff that has meaning, shows integrity and that also defines you as a visual communicator.
The 2nd section has to be projects you've worked on or anything related to commissioned work, this section showcases that you're reliable to work with and have had experience with clients.
To be honest, your question sounds more like a c.v open liner than something specific you want an answer for, lol.

1- Experience : take lots & lots of images for anything & everything , offer shoots for friends & family even for free !
2- Decide which category you want to do as a professional : food photography, Fashion , products , portraits ...etc then you need to know how to target clients or which company to work with
3- More Experience : take more & more images ...
!
4- Compile a portfolio : 20-30 images no more , do not repeat images , be selective ...etc
5- Hunt clients , Jobs , assignments !
6- Experience : more & more images ...!
7- Good luck :D

Just shoot as many as you can. Createe your own style. Make others criticize your work as to know your benchmark on how to proceed. Don't be afraid if others dont like work. Lastly, you be familiarize with your camera.
