Ask him(her) to make an exercise for the board, to observe if he(she) often asks questions, if he(she) follows and understands the courses as well as the daily activities
There are written tests and oral tests..there also ascientific competitions
I depend on what I notice already by naked eyes like how they act in class and what is their reaction in learning ,participation and how they use their language,then I will see their homework and written works because some students sometimes act well in oral but in written they don't act good and the opposite ,that way I can decide the weak points if there were to take care of.
besides the tests , I make a slight conversation concerning the curriculum
Coursework, a constant evaluation of their work over a defined period of time. The quality of their work, or lack of quality will become apparent and will give indicators whether or not remedial action might be required. Exams results for some students can sometimes be misleading and may not be a true reflection of a particular student's abilities, exam nerves etc.
