There are different types of bariatric surgeries. Currently, the most common ones in the UK are Roux-en_y Gastric Bypass, Sleeve Gastrectomy, and Gastric BAND. Bariatric Surgery should be offered to people with a BMI of40 or more, or to those with a BMI between35 and40 but also have a weight related comorbidity such as type-2 diabetes or high blood pressure.

It is recommended to advice patients to try to lose weight by changing their eating behaviour and lifestyle before commencing a bariatric surgery.
