I've used it for a long time.
Here's my profile page http://www.freelancer.com/u/AshrafSabryM.html In fact, I wasn't a Freelancer member from the beginning, but was a member of the excellent vworker.com (formally rentacoder.com) which was acquired by Freelancer, and thus we -vworker members- were all migrated to Freelancer.
First I'll point out the disadvantages because they're more important: Freelancer doesn't provide solid protection for both buyers and freelancers! As a freelancer, you are almost going on your own! For example, a buyer can close the job and run away after he gets the source code of the project from you! I once contacted their support about this fact and their reply was shocking.
They said "Freelancer is just a venue for connecting buyers with freelancers, otherwise you should proceed with jobs based on your own insight" (the support guy means that you should use your own sense to differentiate between good employers and evil ones).
I miss the days of vWorker which had solid strict dispute resolution system which mimicked real world courtyards and prevented any party from cheating or stealing the work of others.
The advantages of Freelancer: - The biggest marketplace on the internet.
You will have good chance of finding jobs suitable for you regardless of your skills set.
- Modern well designed UI.
- Points system that encourages you to collect points and exchange them for useful perks.
- More options to transfer your earned money.
And they transfer it faster than vWorker.
In fact they transfer it for less fees too.
For example, Freelancer transfers to Skrill for no fees at all.
Maybe there're other sides that I didn't cover, but this was my experience with Freelancer.
This can be summarized to:
1- No strong system to guarantee your rights.

2- A big marketplace that increases your chance of winning jobs.

3- Faster money transfers.
