1. Identify the subject and then research it to ensure that your lecture is factually correct.

2. Pick out the "learning" points you wish to make and make sure that they are included.

3. Plan your method ie What "aids" will you use if any, test them and set them up in advance. Correct lesson preparation is of the utmost importance.

4. Consider at what "level" to conduct the lecture, it must be done in a way that can be understood by ALL your students.

5. Have a rehearsal, it doesn't have to be to an audience although help can be sought from friends/colleagues. Time how long the lecture will take. Not too long as it can then "drag on" and interest is lost. Not too short whereby not all the learning points are covered.

6. Check the environment where the lecture is to take place. Not too warm, not too cold, not too noisy or any other distractions.

7. During the lecture speak clearly and pitch your voice at a level where all the students can hear you. Make effective use (impact) of any visual aids. Inform your students before starting: What the subject is, how long the lecture will take and invite them to ask questions at the end.

8. When the lecture is finished invite questions (as mentioned before), then have a short question and answer session instigated by you, to determine if "learning" has taken place.

I try to remember the3 "E's" prior to a lesson and applicable to the students:

Environment:  Temperature, ventilation, lighting, noise, smells, images, textures, furniture.

Excitement: When they arrive do they need calming down or waking up!!

Engagement: Is the lecture liable to be: Too hard, too easy, too long, boring and wil they be able to relate to it (see the point).

Hope this helps.
