Reactive maintenance  "breakdown maintenance" are repairs done when equipment has already broken down . It focuses on restoring the equipment to its normal operating condition by replacing and (or) repairing faulty parts and components.

In simple terms: proactive = before, reactive = after. Reactive maintenance is basically reacting to a fault once it has occurred unlike proactive maintenance where, pre planned maintenance is carried out in the hope to avoid such occurrences.

Reactive maintenance is another name of breakdown maintenance.

This  is when we react to the situation, which is breakdown of a system or equipment.

Reactive maintenance is basically the

“run it till it breaks” maintenance mode.

No actions or efforts are taken to maintain

the equipment as the designer originally

intended to ensure design life is reached.

Reactive maintenance is basically a decision to operate the system or particular machine until breakdown or preventive maintenance never been empahsize or a priority at all. Reactive maintenance is also one of the maintenance strategy but it is very stressfull and very costly to the organization and people involved.

Maintenance can be either preventive or corrective:

  • When we do preventive maintenance we are doing a task before a failure has occurred. That task can be aimed at preventing a failure, minimising the consequence of the failure or assessing the risk of the failure occurring.
  • When we are conducting corrective maintenance the failure has now occurred and we are basically reinstating equipment functionality. To be clear, corrective maintenance can be the result of a deliberate run-to-failure strategy.

Corrective Maintenance can be broken down into the following different maintenance strategies or types:

  • Deferred corrective maintenance
  • Emergency maintenance

Breakdown maintenance is really the same as corrective maintenance as you have essentially allowed a failure to occur.

But when people speak about breakdown maintenance they often mean ‘Emergency Maintenance’ i.e. the type of corrective maintenance that you can not leave for a week or two to resolve, but that is so urgent it must be fixed right now and typically breaks in to the Frozen Weekly Schedule.
