Fame relay is a layer2 protocol used in layer3 devices. In layer2 protocol to communicate with source to destination a physical address is required. In case of switch the MAC address is used as a Layer2 address and ARP is used to find out the MAC address but in case of frame relay switch the DLCI is used to a Layer2 address and reverse-ARP is run to calculate the DLCI value.

There are many two way to used the DLCI value in the frame relay switch interface one is Local  DLCI (Router treated as a destination address), the number of Local DLCI are the number of virtual circuit in the router. Adn the other one is Global DLCI(Router treated as a source address), number of Global DLCI is one in each router..

Thanks
