Key milestones are the milestones which affects the nature of the project from a shape into another completely different one. For example, the feasibility study milestone of a power plant can results into directing the whole following activities of the project into different way based in the selected design/technology of such power plant.

Major milestones are those milestones which affects the full critical path of the project but using a great effort and huge resources. Minor milestones - on the other hand - are also critical but depending on lower level of resources.

Control milestones are the turning points which moves the project from a long phase into another progressing different phase, such as ending the construction phase and starting the finishing phase.
