My first task should be to learn about the team,depatment or oragnisation in details.Example If you are leading a cleaning team you should learn how they clean, the processes they use , the chemical involved , the risks involved , the time it takes to accomplish some tasks , Get to know the indepths of the team and their operations.
I will discus with team regarding where is the major losses against last year and get the proper feedback why have lost in that specific subgroup, also take the feedback on subgroup whih have done very well against last year with reason

I will have a friendly conversation with sub ordinates, generating sense of friendship and removing fear from their mind, secondly introduction of everyone with their job responsibility and what are their problem in that and how it can be improved for smooth functioning of department.
