what are the symptoms of anorexia?
People who intentionally starve themselves suffer from an eating disorder called anorexia nervosa. The disorder, which usually begins in young people around the time of puberty, involves extreme weight loss — at least15 percent below the individual’s normal body weight. Many people with the disorder look emaciated but are convinced they are overweight. Sometimes they must be hospitalized to prevent starvation.
As a western family therapist with a strong personal psychodynamic background and a relevant specific caseload, I am quite surprised to see how psychological issues/factors (commonly underlying the majority of anorexic states) are undervalued if not completely omitted. May I respectfully ask all previous responders how many anorexic patients did they treat directly and how long. Please bear in mind that, when discussing about this psychiatric syndrome, in most of cases we are not dealing with academic matters but with the 'actual life' of a person. Thanks for reflecting on this.
