It can refer to anything "cultural" that has a very significant meaning within that culture and is thus "treasured" or revered. It can be a work of art (painting, sculpture etc) by a notable artist of a particular culture/country eg "The Mona Lisa" by the Italian artist Leonardo Da Vinci, "The Haywain" by the British artist Constable, the statue of the "Little Mermaid" in Copenhagen's harbour, "Nelson's column" in London's Picadilly Circus. It can be a building. "The Pyramids" and some of Tutankamunhs treasures of Egypt, the "Pathenon" on the Acropolis in Athens. It can be an original document "The American Declaration of Independence", the British "Magna Carta", it can even be "cave" art like some of the Aboriginal paintings on rocks in Australia. The list is endless but the one thing they all have in common is their cultural importance to a particular country.
