Quantity surveyor may have role in Pre-contract and Post Contract. In pre-contract he'll be respobsible to take off quantities and price them based on tender documents and get the job. In post-contract he'll be responsible to see work progress is paid off correctly in monthly payment application, if there is deviation from the contracted work, then variations come into picture. How to prepare a claim, its substantiation and approval and final account. Again both these role for a QS is also depends on what side you are employed? i.e. main contractor, consultant, employer or sub-contractor.
Hi there..!
I'd worked as a Quantity Surveyor post-bid on a construction site. I've listed below some of the basic responsibilities I had during this time:- Material Takeoff, complete from the actual construction drawings, and reconciliation of the quantities with the client QS
- Material Estimation and informing the same to the site manager/planner
- Listing out variation of actual quantities versus the pre-bid BOQ. Sometimes items aren't available in the contract BOQ and rates have to be recalculated.
- Preparation of the daily progress report and submission of the same to the clients.
- Preparation of the monthly invoice, certification of the billable quantities and submission of the invoice.
- Keeping track of all variations and claims.
One important thing I was told was to read and re-read the contract because when you are nearing the end, you will need to be well versed in all the clauses you are filing a claim under.
Hope this helps..!
