Q) You have recently noticed one of your colleagues has been struggling to deliver work on time. There is no obvious reason for why this is so but they do seem to be getting increasingly delayed and you know they have made a couple of big mistakes recently too. Their behavior hasn't gone unnoticed by other people across the business as you have overheard a number of managers talking about them in meeting. They don't have a lot of confidence and you don't think they would be able to talk directly to the team manager about whatever is happening. What would you do? A) Talk to your team manager on their behalf and tell them that you are concerned about your colleague so that your manager can address the situation themselves in a professional way. B)Speak to your other colleagues in the team about their behavior as they may have noticed it too; together you could formulate a way of helping them. C)Ask your colleague to join you for a coffee and ask them how they are doing. Tell them that you have noticed they are struggling and offer to help them.
C.
I would ask her/him direclty and try to know what is the reason behind the delay you mentioned, if it was something out of his control, for example, losing a loved one, I would offer my help to share her/his work load with me until she/he can stand up again. Otherwise, I will go with option B.
C, ask how to help him, he/she will pick it up, if not be more direct
I would start with C, then if the excuse happens not to be due to negligence, arrogance or irresponsibility I would try my best to help him out in the best way. I would only go to option B if the person concerned (Mr. X) allows me to, as some team members maynot have noticed any changes and it would make them treat or behave differently towards Mr. X. I also don't agree with option B because incase Mr. X doesn't want any help then your discussion with your team members may turn out like a gossip and it would be nasty and shameful to yourself.
I would talk to my team first before going to the upper level. try to understand what is wrong and what is it that has changed them from productiveness. If thier concers are not valid i would try to explain that what they are thinking does not reflect reality. If thier concerns are valid and they are afraid to speak out i would speak on thier behalf.
C.
At this point I would check for Skill/Will issue.
Skill issue: If this is the factor then we can improve his/her performce by regular feedback or training session.
Will Issue: Check what is the matter that is bothering him/her by one on one session. Motivate them.
