A holistic integrated approach (considering all life cycle potencies) is a key factor to sustainable design.

The design of the place or building when implemented is sustainable, if the users say that it adds to their well being and support/enriches their life.

Having said the above : less use of energy, water, distant and finite materials, artificial cooling and heating, and more use of daylight, natural ventilation, indoor outdoor visual connections, adequalte indoor environmental condition, public transports, and comfortable outdoor activity opportunities paves the way for current sustainablity rated design.

One may take inspiration from traditional buildings / culture of the place, and synergise with modern technologies for an evolved sustainable deisgn.
