Facebook has a beginner's advantage and they stay in the news by promoting both positive and negative news about facebook and social media in general. Facebook is a clever marketing media which uses human emotions of

2. curiosity to know whats going in others life

3. exhibit their success through boasting of ownership of material objects.

4. most importantly, the attraction of the opposite sex.

 

Even introverts can more confidently interact on this forum since they don't have to really face anyone in person.In total, people who feel positive about their presence on facebook stay and those who don't withdraw from it or assume fake identities since the attraction of social is strong.

Make no mistake, there can be competition for facebook,if enough resources are available but facebook has a first movers advantage. It has a large market capitalisation and cash flow. In a free economy, what is stronger, generally has a bigger potential to get stronger. In today's world, its about speed of execution and large companies can get slow and complacent with time. It is interesting space to watch out. But competition will not necessary have a similar shape or size, there are many dark horses lurking around.
