People who are recognized for their great professional achievement and tolerant behavior are those who are usually liked by many and hated by few. It is in the human nature to feel uncomfortable when you are not happy with your own performance. However, there is a very good saying: "The wolves does not care about the opinion of sheep" Those who stand up for themselves value their ups and downs and are happy for the success and happiness of others and are inspired by them are wolves. Everything else is in the sheep category.
I'd say being respected is important. A favourite quote of mine goes "They respected him, and he respected that!"
Being liked, to me personally, is not work-related at all. As long as I am brilliant at what I do, I do not really care if I am liked or not.
It is important to be liked at work without compromizing business performance. I see being liked as a measure of your success as a team player and every body within the work environment better be an effective team player.

Well, in a work environment it is not easy to say why are you being liked. I mean if you are doing your job effectively, properly and you are a polite and down-to-earth character, then you are being recognised for your performance and for your adaptability. But you do not know for sure if they really like you as a person. Nevertheless, if you inspire a feeling of liking towards you, I think that can only be a good thing, it can make the working time and the day more pleasant and easygoing.
