I don't think so. What I believe is not every person or student in this case is alike. Some students understand your rules straight away, while others need a little extra work. What a teacher should do here is to talk to the student in private. Also the teacher must make sure not to embarass this student in front of the others. This might cause a bad relation between the teacher and that particular student. And it might be very difficult to teach a student that respect you. The student may be able to listen and cooperate with the teacher if s/he likes and respects the teacher.
So for me, being a down to earth, friendly teacher may always seem to be a better option rather than being a strict teacher.
