I totally agree with Nadia, many in the news business will tell you that the basic skills of reporting, writing and interviewing are best learned not in a classroom but by covering real stories for the college newspaper. That's how many journalists learned their craft. Also, journalists are increasingly being asked not just to be good reporters and writers, but to also have specialized knowledge in a particular field.

To have a good, even great, career in journalism what you need most is the will to know things and the ability to communicate well. While formal education in journalism can definitely point you in the right direction, only real experience will arm you with skills that will make you stand out as an exceptional journalist. Many well-known journalists never formally studied journalism. They received their training on the go and converted all that they knew, and may have studied, into spectacular stories. An important tip, increase your command over your chosen language. When you know how to use the right words, whether speaking or writing, that's when it becomes a story hard to ignore.
