The progress of the Students in the class room can be measured by asking some questions and a light debate on the Subject if required to know their ability and understanding the concerning topic.

Usually, I use tools that are sensitive to what to be measured. And the students either participate in building the tools or approve it at least.

the best way to measure the progress of the students is the method of continous evaluation. you can not judge the students properly at end of semester or year. so you have to evaluate them continously during the semster only.
