It sounds like a daily progress report to me, and that can be done by updating a shared project plan (e.g. on MS Project). However, a daily15 minute progress update meeting with a one minute update per person, along with a weekly report sound much more reasonable to me. By experience, here in the Middle East many people only start performing at high speed the very day of their progress reports rather than working at a reliable and steady pace. Bringing your staff to this point, you will achieve more than through a control freak's approach of letting them draft a daily report through whichever software. If the project is big enough it might make sense to have a PMO with one dedicated staff keeping track of achievements on daily basis and simply walking around the team asking them about updates. This gives them the spirit of collaboration and takes away some of the pressure of a daily report.
It can or cannot bring an increase in productivity but can bring transparency in the company and reduce errors; which can inline help in saving time and avoiding the unnecessary steps involved in a process which can further lead to excellent productivity and reduce errors.
Frederick Taylor is often called the “father of scientific management.” Taylor believed that organizations should study tasks and develop precise procedures. Read about Scientific Management which can you increase productivity by precising you process.
