Defining project scope in (Project Scope statement) and create the WBS(Work Breakdown Structure) for the project will be essential for defining Project Activities and for estimate resources and duration for each activity and then developing the schedule Model.
You should know the process of your work/project first, for this you should be specialised in that field. Such as Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering etc.
Second you should know the sequence of activities need to be completed in order to complete your project.
If you know about productivity data, hand in experience (Historical data) and how you are going to execute each activity(man-power, machineries), you can calculate the duration of each activity once the quantity of work is known with the above details. If the project duration is given, of cause you need to do top-down calculation not as the above bottom-up.
If you are familiar with some renown scheduling tools such as Primavera P6, MsProject you may apply and easily do the rest of the scheduling work.
