People may not remember who you are. They may not remember your face or your name. People will always remember the good someone has done for them. They will remember the time when someone helped, aided, took time, listened, or saved their life. The good as well as the bad  you have done will live long beyond you and it will percede you as well.

I still remember from my primary years as if it were yesterday the good things that people said to me, did for me, and did with me. Thats why we must always strive to do the right thing and to do good unto others purposely. Every life in which we come in contact we impact.

It's more than true specially in the education sector. The efforts of a teacher to polish the abilities of his students pass on from generation to generation keeping this world enlightened by this knowledge. Thus even after the death of a teacher his good work (knowledge) keeps going on.

Definitely, unfortunately the same can be said for the opposite, the longevity is dependent on how much "good" or "bad" we actually did

It is true. Every good deed we perform touches the lives of the people around us. They will continue to remember you for this long after you are gone. What would be more amazing is, if these people not just remember you for what you have done but also follows in your example, creating a longer chain good deeds. This gives life to the concept of "paying it forward". Hence, the good deed you have done lives on in the lives of more people touched by it through the people who had been previously benefited by it.
