Monitoring is technically defined as systematically checking or scrutinizing something for the purpose of collecting specified categories of data. In ecology it generally refers to sampling something in an effort to detect a change in a physical, chemical, or biological parameter. Implementation monitoring is relatively straightforward, involves quality assurance and project construction management, and may be as simple as a yes-no checklist (Kershner,1997).
