Adobe Illustrator : What's the difference between saving a vector as .AI and saving as .EPS ?

The .Ai file is a native illustrator file but the .Eps file is an Encapsulated Post Script which means simply that it is a format container for the data inside the file to be used by other programs like Photoshop. Data inside it is flattened as a Jpeg file so the other programs don't get a conflict while opening it.
