The role of the clerical worker is becoming a role of the past in countries such as the UK as that role generally requires limited knowledge of office systems and procedures.
The tasks previously done by a clerical worker have now been added to the roles of an Admin/Office Asst, Receptionist, Secretary or even PA.
Clerical work as it has been taken up by other office workers as described above, leaves room for more technological work to be carried out.
A lot less mail is delivered now that technology has email in which many messages can be sent instead of hard copies in the post.
Fax transmissions are also fewer but still a necessary part of office work.
All other work can be done via modern technology and software packages.
In the future, clerical work will continue to be assimilated into other jobs and the demand for clerical workers will diminish, whilst the demand for competent computer users with good knowledge of technologies and modern day systems will increase.
This also does mean that workers could be expected to do more in one role with previously would have been split into two or even three roles in the past.
