What will be the different about managing the large project vs the small project?

The project management of small and large project management one of the tasks of the Director one and differences in size and thus in practice there is no substantial difference in the management of the two types of projects

While different management method when comparing two types of project management

Large project means:

1- more complexity

2- More risks

3- More constraints

4- More Assumptions. .....etc

So, we need more planning and more controlling.

A Project is a Project, wheather it be large or small! and in both the cases they have their own set of challenges and at the same time there are some merits and some demerits with them but specifically if we focus on large project you have to be prepared as you might have to face more complexities, the amount risk is more in it, the constra int increases, more assumptions are to be made...

In short, more adequate and precise planning is needed.

The main difference about managing a large project vs a small project lies with flexibility.

In a large project which takes  years to finish (say3,4,5 years)  both the Project Owner and Contractors will have flexibility as they have more time to make adjustments, if there are delays incurred, there is still much time to catch up; if the Project Owner wants changes in external architectural design in some parts of the structure (for example) , then there is still enough time to make changes.

In a small project which takes about say6 months to one year, there can hardly be flexibility, and the situation will be the exact opposite of the above as time table is short.

Both the scales have their own set of challenges and merits. However, managing large projects needs a lot of communication and cordination. it is very important to keep a close track of activities and schedule as  delays and mis communication can have a cascading effect on the performance.

The small project will be ideally managed as one project one phase with small team, buget, resposiblity and close deadline which make it easier to handle, while the large project will be handled in phases, with bigger scope, higher budget, large team, higher resposiblitity. Each phase will be a project. Also, the processes that will be needed in each one of them.

Project managers must remember that at the end of a project, whether large or small, they are producing deliverables, not task. So many times they get bogged down in the task that they don’t bring their heads up long enough to remember they are actually providing a solution.

No different. you have to follow the project management processes to manage the large and small project. only if your organization have a best practice from managing 

the diffirent project types ( large,Medium, small or Agile, waterfal, service management    ) you have to follow to sav time and improve the probability of project success.

Simply answer I would say in none .. there is no difference!

Yes the team will be bigger, more responsability, longer deadlines, higher budget and more managers will be involved, etc. However, the process and idea behind running a project still the same, regardless of the size and time required to finish it:

You should have an objective, assign a team (even if it was only you working on it), set deadlines, look into the feasibility, etc. Yet, all these steps are doing with small and large project.

Both projects should go through all the phases needed to finish successfully, however, managing small projects needs little team members. But, in both cases, it is neccessary to keep track of plan activities and process schedule to avoid  a cascading effect on the project progress regardless of the size and time required to finish it.

the main difference from my opinion is the number of process you will apply depend on the size of the project.
