I personally disagree with him because typing is itself a great skill, and it plays a very important role in the current corporate world.
Years ago, especially in countries like UK, there were many typing jobs where from the start of the day to the end of the day the office worker spent100% of time typing.
Now as is quite common worldwide, these jobs have evolved and now many duties and responsibilities have been added to the role of a 'typist'. Go into an office today and to be seen are office workers who not only type, but answer the phone and deal with enquiries, sort incoming and outgoing mail and logging it, deal with clients, use a photocopier, email/fax/scan information, file, deal with IT issues, order stationery and many other miscellaneous tasks. Most of these tasks will have involved using typing skills. All these done to help with the smooth running of an office/company/business.
For a person working on a computer in an office, I sincerely feel typing is compulsory as it reduces one thing i.e. looking at the keyboard while you are typing and should concentrate on the screen.
People consider it boring because it is difficult to learn. It requires lot of concentration in the beginning to learn typing. When we start to learn typing we are grown ups and this is the time that learning this skill becomes difficult.
To type with touch typing makes you look professional. I have seen many bosses say that why should I know typing as I am not a secretary.
Typing is skill to increase the work efficiency and time management
with 100% Accuracy.
Typing is the Main Skill which is used from begining to Top level of career. So it is necessary to make your typing speed Best.
Typing is not really a monotonous job, it however depends on what one types everyday. Typing is Defferent from Typewriting which is a course in itself and a complete skill which must be learnt cautiously. It is useful and serves as a pass to enter any good clerical job.
To be a good or professional Typist, one needs good intensive training for not less than two years. Not just every hitting of the keyboart can be called Typing. One needs to know what to type, when to type how to arrange and style each document that is placed in front of them no matter how jerkly it has been put; as well as a good sense in speed and competency in accuracy. As part of the skill one must have been taught how to LOOK at things not just how to SEE things. ( I want Mohammed Alikhan to read this too) Do you realise that many write-ups on the whole mass media have just been printed and not well typed-set?

I say your friend is right (typed this quite fast without looking at the keyvoard)
Typing is a skill not a game lame thing. Without this skill no body can type better.
Typing is a skill that I had to learn for 2 years, and still never got it absolutely correct - although I do type fast. From reading all over around net and so many different documents that I had a chance to see in my carrier, I see that most of people still have no clue that when typing in Ms Word on PC after a full stop there must be 2 space bar hits instead of 1.
Typing is boring - NO. Even if you must just retype a boring information text some of those information will stay in some corner of your brain, and you never know when you can use it.
