A manager needs both depth and breadth of knowledge. What do you say?

They say a specialist has depth of knowledge while a generalist has breadth of knowledge. A manager needs both. What is your opinion?

Certainly knowledge is important not only for a manager but for all stakeholders as well. However, for a manager, what is more important, is to have the attitude to learn and skills to connect with realities in addition a set of other skills. And he must belive in the fact that  there is always a better way of doing a job and knowledge does not have any limit. This will help him enhancing his/her skills & performance.

Yes a manager need the depth and breadth of knowledge are significantly better at predicting three measures of firm performance that was used in the study return on invested capital, sales growth, and Tobin's q. The two knowledge dimensions exhibited either independent non-linear effects or mutually reinforcing effects on each of the three performance measures.

If the manager recruits the fresher...he needs the specialist. or

if hes having experienced in his organisatio .then  he can have the generalist.

Having lots of knowledge is good for a teacher, professor, scientist, scholar, consultant, advisor etc.

A manager requires lots of other skills which are inherent in a person genetically and also which are acquired through management studies, experience and mentoring over a period of time.

They are complimentary - each with their own strengths. Trying to choose one over the other is like trying to choose the most important parent. They are like the two wings of the bird. Useful flight is impossible without equal participation of both.

 

Depth of knowledge leads actually to a specialized brain (an expert mind or a narrow mind, if you wish).

Breadth of knowledge leads actually to a multifarious brain (a broad mind).
