As someone who has been involved in social media thought leadership even before finishing my undergraduate studies. I have had the opportunity to beta test a lot of web2.0 (semantic web) tools over the years.
It is hard for me to name one specific platform, so I am going to name3 of them>
1) Twitter
Because its great for crisis management and citizen journalism. Most importantly its nature of being informal makes it a great platform for gorilla marketing.
2) Quora
Nothing competes with this. I have answered over500 A2A requests on the platform and I find it as a better platform that any established blogging platform out there. Wordpress has its perks though.
3) Pinterest
Viral marketing has never been the same, ever since Pinterest came into the world. The phrase a photo says a10,000 words has really become a reality thanks to its Pin button, much like Facebook's Like.
Bonus: Livefyre (The commenting system)
It has helped me to work on 'Side-Track Journalism', a term I coined myself to critic brands within the comments on the blogs that use the system.
Still if I had to choose just one at gun point, it would have to be Twitter.
Twitter is my favorite program and i can get everything from twitter on any topic.
