It depends on what phase of the project I have reached, what process I'm working on, the size and industry of the project, environmental factors and the organizational laws. But in general, go by a reliable method. Applying the PMI processes is great for global projects, as you will make sure everything is covered, especially for big projects. Also cultural and distance issues won't cause any problems.

To insure that the project will be successfull, i use the ERAPS method which i have introduced in my structure in the installation of equipments  for numerous high end projects.

Evaluation : visit of the commercial to understand the project and the needs of the customer (tecnical diagnostic)

Recommendation : cost estimates, proposal with alternatives (products, services)

Acceptation : signature of the contract, precise specifications

Planification : anticipating with team selection, delay of delivery phase of work

Supervision : permanent control at each phase until the receipt

Generall it works for decoration projects and create a confidence climate between providers, commercials, tecnicals, logistic, and the most important are customers who get fidelised and contribute to success.

The main challenge in global project management is effective communications due to issues such as different time zones, different languages, and different cultures. Project managers in such situations use assistants to handle such issues if present. Another major issue is involving all team members in the planning phase which decreases the effectivness of the plan if not addressed. A third issu is the differences in business processes and this is a very tricky issue and I learned that a project manager either ask for re-engineering the subject processes before launching the project or accept what is being offered based on the overall benefits. The last issue is risk and change management. These issues are very much dependent on the local cultures and usually handles by the local project manager's assistants.
