In my opinion, beautiful language, well-developed (and flawed) characters, vivid descriptions, powerful symbols, and a deeper meaning of some social significance. For me, a good literary work has to evoke emotion. Even if I don't recall the plot or the names of the characters ten years down the line, I should be able to remember how the book made me feel.
