What makes some Fonts unique or preferred to others when formating an official document?

my former Boss was always specific on fonts to use for different documents, either official, minutes of meetings, internal memo etc

looking to the explanation you gave in regard to your ex boss - I would say he likes visually to determine how important documents are :) ...otherwise, there is no other then personal preferences, some rules still does apply, e.g. Times New Roman for publishing, Tahoma for legal documents, and similar

Fonts represent you as your sophisticated skills to your client which indicate your simpilicity and readable format, if your fonts are based on pattern, officials will be unable to read and understand that.
