 Yes, AUTO CAD is the basic Design software because of some Reasons

1. It is User Friendly Software and most of the people can access to this software when compared to other softwares

2. It is the software in which we can operate draft( drawing of Existing Models) design( creating new models from the existing ones)

3. It is the Basic Design Software because the thorough knowledge in Autocad is verymuch essential to operate other softwares relating to any background such as Mechanical, Electrical, Civil etc

Yes the AutoCAD is the Basic Engine for Start of any professional Engineer in any Industry i.e. Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and many more. Some of the soft ware  for Mechanical Engineering is not CAD Supported but it would be a good option if the Mechanical engineer also Knows the AutoCAD because this is a basic Engineer Software and most well-known and common Practice in the engineering Market.

In my opion it all depends with what program you start out ...

It all depend if you want to draw2D or3D (model) for the price I would prefer Microstation or SolidWorks.

I found Microstation (Intergraph/Bently) easier, but than some one starting with AutoCad finds it easier;

Inventor is a program to model (both developed by Autodesk... correction Intergraph sold their3D version to Autodesk);.

CATIA is the most complicated program I have worked with; I love working with SolidWork when it comes to modeling... both act very similar and both are developed by Desoto;

Yes AutoCAD is the basic tool. Any technical person shall have an basic idea of it. Engineers, Technicians, Document Contollers, Managers etc must know AutoCAD.

Still best if you learn SolidWorks, Inventor, CATIA etc which are advanced Engineering Tools. They make our design easier and accurate.
