No one likes to talk about letting employees go, and even the best leaders admit to having problems saying goodbye to unproductive team members.No team leader wants to think he or she has chosen poorly or that the people on a team may not all be productive members of that team. However, as the person responsible for a team of individuals, a leader must weed out any potential problematic team members early in the expedition.
Pruning and improvement is the tough but necessary step in building a high performance team. If done well, pruning and improvement will provide additional substantial lift to the team and more importantly, enable ongoing sustainment
To form or prepare team or group of people to work together in effective way they should go through certain stages. These stages include : forming, storming, norming and end with performing. Those stages happen each time they start a new task or new member join the team. Your role as a team leader is very important and critical to observe and follow up to avoid any problems.
Pruning in this context means retaining the human resources that is actually required for the project or the operations. The surplus manpower may not necessarily be fired but may be assigned to other projects or operations where they are required.
For projects, pruning is done when the project is nearing completion or when major activities on the critical path have been completed before schedule which gives a level of comfort to the project manager to complete the project within the cost & time schedule.
For operations, pruning is done to maintain the optimum human resources in line with the fall in demand, operational constraints or adverse circumstances. This is mostly applicable to contractual staff, or Contractor's men.

Managing your team of unique individuals is a huge responsibility but a crucial one. They are the ones who ultimately produce your organizations value. Getting the best team together is good for everyone no matter how hard it is or long it takes. It’s a living organism that needs to be pruned to grow. A good leader will get the best out of their so called weak group member to its full potential. It just require some motivation, encouragement and patience.
In my opinion it is to identify the weaknesses and take steps to develeop it to overcome the weakness (Prune the weaknesses) ; identify the potentials and further strengthen them (Prune the stagnation); Realign roles for productivity (Prune unproductive roles).
