The footprint of a Communication satellite is the ground area that its  transponders  offer coverage, and determines the satellite dish transmiter required to receive each transponder's signal. There is usually a different map for each transponder as each may be aimed to cover different areas of the ground.

The coverage area for satellite down link is called footprint. we mostly consider it for down linking our required signal. Each satellite has different footprints for different areas like south-asia beam, Middle East beam and so on.
