Pumps are used to transfer liquids from one point (i.e. Tanks ,rivers, wells ) to another and from that principle you can select your pump. where selecting pumps depend on the flow rate and require head plus the liquid that you are going to transfer. also pumps can be used for liquid circulation (I.e. Heart , water pump in cars) where if you have a close system which is filled up with a liquid and you need to circulate that liquid throughout the system.
