I believe in Mr. Iqbal's opinion. Correct me if im wrong sir. The mere fact that you  need to maintain good relationships with your team doesn't mean that you discuss and be involve in  their personal issues or happenngs. It helps! Although it will only lead to questioning your sincerity and emphaty at the end.

Very well, I think that there is more than work in professional relations, it's a human connection after all, and it involves that you ask and know about your team members in order to keep the workflow going. One thing I do, is that I never call my team members during their vacations to ask about work, but I do it to ask about them and see how they are doing.

Frequently enough. I must state that inter-personal relationship in this sense is key. Also, the cultural aspect may play a role. In some cultures it take time and some closer relation before you can indulge such questions without seeming "intrusive" or "nosy".

In the Netherlands, for instance, it does not go as far as asking about family, unless you have been invited to in a conversation or through personal or absent acquaintance with them. It may sound strange and too distant, but while this is quite customary and friendly in the Arab World and the US for instance, it can come across as weird, slimy or "unauthentic" in a country like Holland, who are known, like the English, for being quite prudent, sober and bit distant (unless you're close enough, not from day one or two) .
