1. Breakdowns generally occur at inopportunate times which  leads to poor, hurried maintenance and excessive delays in production.

 2. Reduction of output.

3. Faster plant deterioration.

4. Increased chances of accidents and less safety to both workers and machines

5. More spoilt material.

6. Direct loss of profit.

7. Unplanned downtime can't be excluded.

8. Labour intensive.

9. Unneeded maintenance of some component.

Disadvantage of PM could be undue maintenance of equipment, hence loss of man hours and revenue, as It was realized that preventive maintenance of equipment may not be required upon OEM recommended frequency all the times, therefore condition based maintenance was introduced, which gives comparatively much realistic approach of equipment maintenance.

To shift from PM to CBM, it is recommended to perform adequate PMs of  equipment to be familiar with its behaviour, as sometimes the same equipment doesn`t behave alike at two plants located within same premises.

Disadvantages:

  • Does not eliminate catastrophic failures
  • More labor intensive.
  • Includes some invasive activities that have the potential to cause incidental damage to components.

There is no Black or White when it comes to Preventive Maintenance. It depends on the total benifits and revenue generation when planning for PM. There are some operations where the cost of one failure is equal to100 millions of dollars when the cost of PM was almost10% that amount. Also, It is more crucial and important when one failure can result in..fatalities! On the other hand, to other operations PM can be just a waste of time and resources.

the disadvantage of preventive maintenance is hindrance to operation, spare parts expences, consumable, manpower and contractor cost is high. it cannot maximize the life span of equipment parts. and if not properly executed the PM or if the incharge of PM activity is incompetent, it will result to more worst scenario of unacceptable losses, it also causes of early deterioration of equipment.

Increase in product cost but it will be recovered by proper and stable production without any accidental shutdown (will reduce the No of accidental shutdowns ) which will save your labour and breakage in production flow..so i can’t say that there is any disadvantage of PM .

one other thing i would like to mention ,if you will never take the proper PM that will effect on the other parts/components of plant /machinery .
