there is two section :

sound editing : software depending of the Os ,windows or mac , for windows sound editing can be done with soundforge,adobe audition, adobe booth,wavelab,audacity,cubase,nuendo,protools, Also with some video editing software such aVid media composer,premiere,magix x2 pro, vegas, etc... depending of the tasks and the need , for mac wavelab, logic pro, cubase etc...

sound mixing mac/Pc : protools,garage band,logic pro x, cubase , neundo,reaper etc... depending in needs also

Adobe Audition is one of the best for me because it was easy to understand and learn as well.
