Can you tell us more about the current setup and the setup where you want to move the server to? Are you running a licensed version of VMware? For Vmotion to work you need2 hosts that are connected to the same storage device. Vmotion moves the Virtual machine to a different host but the actual files stay in the same place on the shared storage. There is limitations with same CPU types of hosts. Storage Vmotion will move the files between two storages devices or datastores. You can do both so it will move hosts and datastore. To do both of these moves to work you need a vCenter server.
Yup. Function for this is right out of the box for VMWare ESX and can be said as one of the core functionality of ESX. Moving live virtual server among physical can be done manually or automatically for load balancing and high availability purpose. One impressive thing about virtual servers in ESX is you (or VMWare) dont need to shut down virtual host to move it.
1- run and install VCenter
2- Run Vmotion
3- Config your Vswitch to use Vmotion option
4- Login to the Vcenter
5- Do migrate
Storage vMotion
VMware vSphere5.1 and later versions combine standard vMotion with VMware vSphere Storage vMotion in a single migration. This means you can live-migrate an entire virtual machine between hosts, between clusters or between data centers— without disruption or shared storage between the involved hosts.
