Let me focus on healthcare organizations (but the answer is also applies to other type of organizations). In addition to what have been mentioned by my colleagues about information flow & communications, I can add better coordination. It is the top management main role to ensure there is an effective level of coordination among the organization. This could be done by enhancing the communication, by training & development of human resources within the organization, and also by good process & procedures re-engineering.

Companies can take a host of steps to improve their ability to execute strategy. The following are some of the possible examples.

·         Focus corporate staff on supporting business-unit decision making.

·         Clarify and streamline decision making at each operating level.

·         Focus headquarters on important strategic questions.

·         Create centers of excellence by consolidating similar functions into a single organizational unit.

·         Assign process owners to coordinate activities that span organizational functions.

·         Establish individual performance measures.

·         Improve field-to-headquarters information flow.

·         Define and distribute daily operating metrics to the field or line.

·         Create cross-functional teams.

·         Introduce differentiating performance awards.

·         Expand nonmonetary rewards to recognize exceptional performers.

·         Increase position tenure.

·         Institute lateral moves and rotations.

·         Broaden spans of control.

A recent analysis of  over100 customers who embraced strategy execution showed an alarming75% failure rate that was attributed to2 main reasons

  1. Lack of effective2-way communication among all levels throughout the organization .. where this communication comes too late and too little to engage the necessary people early enough\\
  2. Lack of "sufficient" motivation  (What's in it for me ??) specially at the working level on the ground

I can add further elements ,,,, but these2 above are enough to start working on !!
