That is right. The trend in IT is to use multi-layers in one system instead of using multi-systems to carry out the same job. The new nano technology helped a lot in this trend.
The benefits of this trend are many, reduction in cost, space, manpower ... etc.
Information technology is one in which data is the core, social networking has evolved as a new source of business intelligence, and cloud computing has become the driving force behind the business growth. Since the Volume of Business & IT activities increases day by day, IT is evolving to its new forms & shapes.
Correct understanding of the question is NECESSAY to be able to answer it correctly.
In your question, the use of the terms "multi-system" and "multu-layer" needs further clarification what do you mean by these two terms
Back in the eightis and early nineties ,.. we had the paradigm of "multi-vendor" / "multi-platform" / "multi-protocol" systems which needes lots of integraton/coexistenc/interoperable architecture to make them able to talk to each other !
In the Internet-computing era dominated by HTTP/HTML and other web technologies on a common (TCP/IP) networking, the whole scene has changed dramatically
Now we may talk about levels (or tiers) where we can place systems regardless of their vendor, platform, operating system, ... etc .. in these layers (tiers) which may represent the functionality (application logic, presentation logic and data logic) or alternatively .. Web servers, Web browsers and networking elements in between.
This is how I understand the question ... However, if you give different explanation to what you mean by multiple systems and multiple layers ... then I may be able to give a different answer accordingly !
