I always talk about design when it comes to email marketing in general.
1) Design defines a good user experience.
2) The span of attention on mobile is literally under2 minutes per message on mobile.
For example take group buying/ coupon sites for example. I have yet to see email newsletters that show me a full campaign in a single view without having to scroll down to read the full text.

To my opinion, one should craft his email in a way that a consumer easily understands a few things from it:
Who sent the mail?
What is the promotion?
What is the message?
What is the offer?
Otherwise your email will be skipped or deleted.
