The validity of the food items depends on the efficient packaging and the well storage conditions.

There are signs of deterioration of the food which lead to the suitable judge if food is safe or bad regardless the date of expiration:

  1. blowing up the tin pack.
  2. changes in colour of food
  3. changes in food odour
  4. changes of vescosity of fluids
  5. sourness of sweetened food
  6. rancidity of fats and oil
  7. visible growth of yeast and mold
  8. slime formation over the surface
  9. over-ripening of fruits
  10. clustering of powders

Yea, for non-experts it is more safe to throw out any expired food.

in terms of compliance with law, when food is expired then it should not be kept in the food store or for presenting for human consumption.

But you may use it alternatively to animals if possible or if there is accurate lab verification that it does not pose problems for human then you may use it in repackaged form and stating that it is safe for use.

You know that which is written on the label shelf life is the half of actual shelf life, for example if R& D examined a new recipe for new product and they find that these product will be spoiled  after4 years, then the shelf life will be2 years.

For this reason you will not throw away the food after the date of expire, then I am totally agree with the answer of Mr. Mohamed Saei

The system of labeling is voluntary. This brings us to terminology. The actual term "Expiration Date" refers to the last date a food should be eaten or used. Last means last -- proceed at your own risk.

No one can say that you can not eat, it is your choice, but the manufacturer assumes no responsibility if something is wrong. Of course reserve is left until the product really is not fit for consumption, does not end the day exactly as it is written.

Depends on type of food. It is advisable to throw. Please find tips from USDA beneath.

Since product dates don't give you a true guide to safe use of a product, here are some other tips

  • Purchase the product before the date expires.
  • If perishable, take the food home immediately after purchase and refrigerate it promptly. Freeze it if you can't use it within times recommended on the chart.
  • Once a perishable product is frozen, it doesn't matter if the date expires because foods kept frozen continuously are safe indefinitely.
  • Follow handling recommendations on product.
Storage Times After Purchase Poultry 1 or2 days Beef, Veal, Pork, and Lamb 3 to5 days Ground Meat and Ground Poultry 1 or2 days Fresh Variety Meats (Liver, Tongue, Brain, Kidneys, Heart, Chitterlings) 1 or2 days Cured Ham, Cook-Before-Eating 5 to7 days Sausage from Pork, Beef or Turkey, Uncooked 1 or2 days Eggs 3 to5 weeks
